Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty presented the award for best picture but they had an envelope for the previous award, actress in a leading role. As Emma Stone of “La La Land” was the winner, Dunaway mistakenly said that “La La Land” was the best picture winner, when it was actually “Moonlight”.
The cast, crew and producers of “La La Land” took the stage to accept the award. Producers Jordan Horowitz and Marc Platt gave speeches, but something seemed amiss as Platt spoke. There was commotion among the people standing behind him as a man wearing headphones appeared and checked red envelopes being held by producers.
The third producer, Fred Berger, spoke briefly before looking at a confused scene. “We lost, by the way,” he said then. So Horowitz took the microphone again and explained what happened. “There’s a mistake. ‘Moonlight,’ you guys won best picture. This is not a joke.”
Jimmy Kimmel alluded to Steve Harvey, whose 2015 reading of the wrong Miss Universe winner instantly becomes the second most-embarrassing awards show flub. “Guys. This is very unfortunate what happened. Personally, I blame Steve Harvey for this.”
