A snorkeler cameraman in Hawaii had a close encounter with a scary eel in Oahu’s Hanauma Bay. He first saw a large moray wrestling with a smaller octopus.
The fight ended after the eel teared up some of the octopus’ tentacles with its mouth. However, the victim managed to escape, leaving behind a cloud of black ink.
“The octopus was in a life-and-death struggle, and it sacrificed an arm or two for its life,” explained George Burgess, a marine biologist at the Florida Museum of Natural History, speaking with National Geographic.
Octopus is a favorite food of morays, along with other fish and invertebrates. So it was really angry after the escape of its prey. That may be why it decided to attack the cameraman, that managed to flee as well.
“Just like how you don’t tug on Superman’s cape, you don’t get too close to a moray eel,” Burgess said.
