The three minute footage begins with a woman’s smile and continuously zooms out, revealing a shot of the universe, ten billion light years away from Earth. It was created by astrophysicist Dr. Danail Obreschkow from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research at the University of Western Australia.
Dr Obreschkow even created an app, ‘Cosmic Eye’, to generate the video. His original idea was to use it in a class at the university.
The most curious thing is that the video is actually from 2012, but it didn’t went viral until this year. It was after the page The Science World shared it. From that moment it received 38 million views in a couple of months.
“I was teaching an arts class … a bunch of 200 non-scientists, and I thought I wanted to do something to explain the different scales of the universe,” Dr Obreschkow said.
