Warren Beatty, one of the presenters of the the Academy Award for best picture, tried to explained what happened after “La La Land” was mistakenly read by his partner, Faye Dunaway. “I want to tell you what happened. I opened the envelope and it said ‘Emma Stone, La La Land.’ That’s why I took such a long look at Faye and you. I wasn’t trying to be funny.”
However, Emma Stone told the press backstage that the card was in her hands the whole time. “I was holding my Best Actress in a Leading Role card that entire time, so whatever story that was, I had that card,” she said. “I’m not sure what happened.”
Anyway, she didn’t seem too unhappy with the outcome, confessing she was a huge fan of “Moonlight”, the actual winner. “Is that the craziest Oscar moment of all time…? Cool. We made history tonight!”
Reports claimed that two cards are made for each awards category and two workers stand at either side of the stage alternating between who has the responsibility of handing them out. So it’s entirely possible there were two cards and they got mixed up.
