A police officer captured the moment he rescued a passenger from a burning car, just seconds before it burst into flames in Athens, Georgia, US. Dan Whitney had the incident recorded on his body camera after being called to a car fire in which the driver tragically died.
Officer Whitney responded to the call at 3am on August 16. When he arrived, the car was already engulfed in flames after it appeared to have hit a large tree.
A passenger was yelling for help from a small rear driver-side window, according to an Athens-Clarke County Police Department statement. Whitney immediately retrieved his fire extinguisher from his own vehicle in an attempt to put out the flames.
He then set out trying to pull the passenger out of the window as all the car doors had been jammed shut. The police officer was forced to bend the door frame to provide the passenger with a small gap to crawl out of.
Moments later, an explosion from under the bonnet of the car forces the officer to jump backwards, knocking his body-camera to one side. Tragically, the driver of the vehicle was killed in the fire.
