His name is Justo Gallego and he lives in Madrid, Spain. He is 90 years old and he devoted 53 years of his life to build a cathedral by hand on the outskirts of the city.
The origin of this monumental act of faith was a promise. After surviving tuberculosis in 1961, he made a pledge to build a cathedral in gratitude to God.
This farmer, bullfighter and monk started this duty in 1963, after recovering from the deadly illness. He had no prior construction experience and his resources were extremely limited.
“When I started building this cathedral, the word on the street was that I was crazy,” Justo told Great Big Story. “They didn’t believe I was going to be so dedicated, and well, I’m proving them wrong,” he added.
