Sabri Ünal, 34 years old, was protesting in the streets of the Üsküdar district of Istanbul during the July 15 failed coup, when he saw two tanks approaching. He decided to do something about it.
He held his hands up to prevent the first tank from advancing and then he lied in front of it after it didn’t stop. He never imagined that the tank would rolled him over.
“As soon as I understood that it would roll over me, I laid down between the treads. Thank God I survived and I stood up,” Ünal told reporters from the hospital, some days after what had happened.
“Then the second tank came. I tried to escape from it, but when I understood that I wouldn’t be able to do that, I tried to lie down between the treads once again. The second tank crushed my arm,” he added.
He was taken to the hospital with a broken arm. Luckily for him, the coup failed and he managed to survive.
